zsh --version
zsh 5.9.0.1-dev (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)

Issue still exist when using cd long<tab><tab>

Does this require some system package update as well, as building zsh from source isn't enough?

And randomly when pressing tab while trying to autocomplete zsh crashes with (might be just dev version issue)
free(): invalid pointer
[1] 1179055 IOT instruction (core dumped) zsh
