I use history substitution all the time. I'm occasionally annoyed by the need to extra-quote exclamation points, but not enough to give up the feature, which you can always turn off with unsetopt banghist.
Of all the impenetrable mysteries in zsh the most inscrutable is completion.  There must be, what? a dozen options all chewing on the same bone.  My  zshrc has settings imported from somewhere and taken on faith, I'm afraid to tinker because you can break something that's only going to show up when the moon is full and then you forgot what you changed and can't fix it.  I often wonder if some philanthropist at some time or other wrote a 'complete guide to completion' so that one might confidently know how to control all that.  As usual the power is awesome but the skill to use it is hard to obtain.
