vared and associative arrays

I just noticed that `vared' doesn't know anything about associative arrays,
and as a result will change an associative array into a string consisting
only of its values, as if you did `assoc="$assoc"`.

I probably won't have time to look at this before the weekend so if someone
gets ambitious ...
