"git rev-parse" doesn't interpret "--" that way:
% git rev-parse HEAD
3b703ccc9862106dd5eba7ee7e01e291866e9d1f
% git rev-parse HEAD --
3b703ccc9862106dd5eba7ee7e01e291866e9d1f
--
% git rev-parse -- HEAD
--
HEAD
