(Apologies for lack of format, now out of office on phone.)
Tried with oldish Fedora (like about 7 or 8 years), 32 bit, and also RedHat also a few issues back but not quite so old, 64 bit.
What about environment: standard variables, open file descriptors, things in path...? Can't think of anything obviously relevant.
