PATCH: cleanup inappropriate use of {...} specs with _arguments or _alternative

[Oliver Kiddle <opk@xxxxxxx>]

The use of the curly bracket action form with _arguments and
_alternative is only rarely useful but there's a couple of functions
where it is extensively applied for no real purpose.

This patch cleans that up.
