In the absence of any objections, further feedback or comments within
the next few days, I'd like to push this so that it doesn't get lost
and forgotten. There's nothing to stop further refinements taking place
after.

Did you want to post an updated patch based on Jun T.'s feedback such as
to remove the stdbool.h include and commented echo commands in the test
cases?

I don't have any comments myself. And to answer the other question you
asked, I don't have access to AIX or HP/UX. I suspect other
compatibility issues with such systems may have crept in with other
changes and while we'd prefer to retain compatibility there's only so
much we can do without access.
