if you can't replicate like this (i can't), try:

  % zsh -dfic 'zle -N x; print'
  +q524742

(and it stays there)

i couldn't get it to happen in iterm, kitty, ghostty, alacritty, or
tabby, so maybe terminal.app is just misbehaved? i didn't look too
closely at the code and i'm not familiar with this query functionality
in general so idk. but even if that's the case it feels like
terminal.app is popular enough, and the issue is disruptive enough, that
an opt-out may not be sufficient...?
