Thank you for coming back to me.

This morning I upgraded to Fedora 44 and I can't replicate it even with 5.9 that comes with the distribution. Both 5.9.1 and master also work as expected.

I don't really understand what was broken there.

i was finally able to look at this again

i can't replicate the problem with any version or locale on macos
sequoia or debian trixie. but i was able to do so with 5.9 built from
git (+ patches needed to fix configure) in a fedora 43 container

not sure what's different there. i didn't bother to investigate much
further because i *can't* replicate it any more if i build from 5.9.1 or
master

you didn't seem certain if that was the case for you. can you confirm?
