i can't replicate this with 5.9, 5.9.1, or master, on either macos or
debian, using ffmpeg 8.1. do you have a back-trace or anything so we can
fix the root problem?

i like replacing the help parser but not so much the use of awk. there
are several other issues as well. but considering the current function
is completely unusable, i'll probably merge this tonight anyway. i'll
follow up with some more improvements later
