Philippe's latest patches are wide-reaching, the sort of thing I'd normally prefer to apply after a next release.

The last pre-release test release was at the end of June. Can we finalize that and get 5.9.2 out? I know it's on a branch now, but I worry that sweeping changes will make backports difficult.

Also, just more reviews than mine would be very helpful.
