In reality prompt can be set to almost anything.
The first unix shell, the thompson shell used %; the PWB/Mashey shell also used %,
a few others including csh used %. bourne was the one that arbitrarily used $ and
i doubt much thought was put into it.
Since i am here though, i like v3 even more so with a monospace font.
